Why Second Life is Not a Game #276

Let’s start with the day you create your avatar beginning with the links of what ever ‘keyword’ you may have searched or maybe an AD on some website. You clicked it. You clicked it for a reason, whether it be intrigue, wonder or just sheer boredom, you wanted to see what was the hype over this particular Virtual World. As one of the top Virtual Worlds, it stands on it’s own for interest by resident life and who doesn’t want to be apart of that? So you hit that orange-yellow button that reads “JOIN NOW, It’s fast, free and easy!” You think, ‘What’s the harm in that?’ and proceed without a second thought. After following the prompts, you are faced with the viewer screen that allows you to ‘login’ your avatar. You are then whisked away into what looks like a video game but is clearly far from it. Having to deal with the instructions as a, and I use only technical terms here, ‘newb’ you start to understand the movements and learn how to communicate with other residents in world.

Then you learn about ‘teleporting’ and that is when things take a turn. You start to encounter other, older residents, some who are willing to help others who are there to torment you for a few weeks as you learn the ropes. Yes this happens to literally everyone. Why? It is a form of initiation I guess, to see if you are cut out for what follows. But wait, you made a friend. Someone who was just as new as you, and you stick together for as long as you can to fight off the obstacles of Second Life and all that it has to offer. You find out about travel and exploration, shopping and hunting, partying and sex. Things seem to be great now that you have friends and have finally found a place that you just fit. Even if you use Second Life as a form of escape from your real life or just to chat with people you have never met or intend on meeting. As a huge virtual chat room, it takes the cake. It doesn’t have goals or level-ups, there are no trophies or winners and losers. It is just you, and your new found friends.

But then things take a turn for the worse. Drama follows, something went wrong with a new Boyfriend/Girlfriend/Friend/Virtual-Family-Member and you have no idea what to do. Leave? No you enjoy it way too much here, you now have a home, an inventory ready to explode and friends that know you better than your Real Life ones. So you Mute/Block/Erase the memory of the person who has jilted you and move on like the rest of the residents before you. As a community we all go through this experience, no one is left out of a little drama and hurt but there is an upside: Love. Love from your Virtual friends & family. It is what you craved in Real Life, attention from a loved one, someone to listen to your thoughts, wishes, and dreams while making you laugh to death all day long.

We all have said at one point, “I am leaving this place and never coming back!!!” but we miss it too much to actually stay away. Real Life one day will bring you back down and you will need a friend to pick you back up, then you remember the memories you have made in here and you log in sheepishly ashamed but you are forgiven and welcomed back with open arms.

There are no winners, there are no losers, just amazing residents who shape our visions of this World and the next.

Got invited to a picnic at Versailles with Marie-Antoinette & the courtiers ~ I am afraid I was very dull since I got swept up in IMs and lagginess and ended up mostly making OOC comments while lying down on the picnic blanket and showing off my legs :P

I did listen to the others reciting poetry and my friend Louise even arrived and shared a little verse.

Some gentler passion slide into my mind,

My choice for making a poster for Strawberry Singhs movie poster challenge was “Labyrinth” the 80s movie with David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. (I dont care if its cheesy I just LOVE it!)

This is uncanny.Just today I was listening to a song by Sarah Blasko called “Bird on a wire” and the music video has her walking around with an arrow in her side. I wonder if this was the inspiration for the photos or if its just one of those odd coincidences that only I find significant.

But enough about my ramblings.I do find these photos pretty in a very surreal way.Love the composition of them,its a very airy feeling like shes tumbling through the air.

I had gotten the perms fixed for the hat and saved and was boxing the whole outfit to put on marketplace when I realized the perm had set itself to no transfer. Again.

And now even I the creator cant change them. So its back to pick apart the whole thing and hope I can find the piece that is messing up things. Wish me luck.

Forgotten City

A once-great, clockpunk-ish city where the prosperous Residents were served by the miraculous mechanical automatons. The people have long since disappeared, but the automatons remained — and still take care of the crumbling stone walls, abandoned halls, and rusty fences.

Forgotten City is a very peculiar place,filled with old timey looking building and where strange automatons roam around.Otherwise its deserted unless you encounter another visitor (wich I didnt) There is a feeling of abandonement and nature is slowly but surely taking over the place.

A thought about the name of the sim,it may be named Forgotten city but I doubt its a place youll forget easily after visiting.

((I only captured a bit of the city and some of the alleyways but I might go back and take some of the more steampunkish elements later this week :)

I have recently started to make more hairs but there is a problem.Of course Id very much like to make it in different colors and as long as I just use the one texture its simply to retexture the whole linkset.But once alpha gets involved and you have several textures it gets a little more tricky. And manually adding them is tedious and its very easy to texture the wrong sculptie/prim/flexi.

So to save my sanity I thought. “OK the simplest way must be with a linked texture changer script” So I got one…but I cant understand how to work it even after reading the instructions.

So I got another one.Same with that.

Does any of you know any good texture changer scripts that are simple and easy to use?

Waka&Yuki are closing down and have set absolutely all of their hairs to 0L$. ALL of them. New ones old ones, limited ones. ALL. There are tons of hairs to choose from, these ones are just my select favourites.

If you’re not a mesh fan or just fancy a change then these are ideal for you because they are all prims. Not a single mesh in sight!

I suggest you go down there quickly because they haven’t said on the blog how long this will be on for.

So…a while back I noticed that total number of people following my blog was nearing 30. I thought I would make a post about it. But then before I could do that it went over that number. So then I thought maybe I should wait until it reached 40 but that could take forever.

So the other day I was looking around for some pretty new skins and found myself in a small shop and started looking around. I found a skin that I wanted to try the demo of and got it.

BUT it wasnt the demo at all….so like that I lost 1580 L :(

And the skin was only so-so.

Light over Caserta

This sim is based on the RL 18th century palace Reggia di Caserta who was built to rival Versailles and despite the SL version not recreating the whole palace grounds it is very admirable as a microcosm. It is a good place to go when you just want to wander in a beautiful garden with an amazing palace backdrop.

‘Du Barry Getaway Skybox’

Have a small skybox in 18th century style with the ‘Du Barry Getaway Skybox’! This skybox with an 18th century interior allows you to have an residential space in true 18th century style!

The skybox has measurements of 18x22 m, meaning a surface of 396 m2, therefore allowing you to place it on a land parcel of only 512 m2 already!

The skybox has a prim count of only 34 Prims, and as the rooms are neither too big nor too small, they do not have remain bare. You would have enough prims left for furnishing!

So this evening a friend of mine IM-ed me asking if I wouldnt want to accompany her to 1920s Berlin (rp sim) because there would be a special guest at a gathering there.

I have to admit to being a bit dense in this situation and going “Rod who?” my friend answered “Rod Humble-as in the Linden Lab CEO”

Of course I went to have a look.

So people for a little while I was near a Linden for the first time since I joined back in 2007. And it was THE Linden.

(Even though I couldnt see him for the amount of avatars packed into a room and crashing in the middle of it.)
